Paunang Salita

Family visa now linked with salary PDF Print E-mail

P.K. Abdul Ghafour | Arab News

JEDDAH: The Foreign Ministry will issue permanent resident visas for wives and children of expatriate workers in the Kingdom, without considering their profession, Al-Yaum Arabic daily has reported.

“The ministry’s office in Riyadh issued such recruitment visas for three days last week and stopped it temporarily. It is expected that the ministry would resume the service next month,” a ministry source told the paper.

The news is a relief for many of the seven million expatriate workers, who are unable to bring their families on resident visas due to their profession written on their iqamas.

The Foreign Ministry and the Recruitment Office only issued permanent resident and visit visas to those in white-collar jobs such as engineers, doctors and executives. The Al-Yaum report said the ministry would only look at the financial status of the applicant. “The family visa is no more linked with profession,” the source said. He said the ministry stopped processing applications in order to implement the new criteria. “This is a great news for thousands of professionals like me who are unable to bring their wives and children to the Kingdom because of the profession in iqama,” said Shabeer Ali, a computer engineer based in Jeddah.

The future of Arabic language: A foreigner’s perspective (Part 1) PDF Print E-mail

Aleem Abdul Hannan Tago

By Abdul Hannan Tago, ArabNews

I have been following carefully with great enthusiasm and interest the articles and discussions on Arabic language, appearing in the Kingdom’s local newspapers.  Let me first salute and join in solidarity with the brothers, who have been defending the language of the Holy Qur’an. Since, I had the privilege to learn the language in written and spoken forms, thanks to Al-Azhar University from where I finished my Arabic course with a major in mass communication way back in 1992. Hence, I think I have something to share with all of you.

As non-Arab expatriate, I was strongly encouraged to participate in this vital subject with a hope that such participation is constructive and useful and, that will leave and create a positive impact on the valued readers of different nationalities, creed and color holding different positions.

MORO NOTES - 08 Dec 09 PDF Print E-mail

By Samira Gutoc , YMPN (08-Dec-2009)

Belated Eidul Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) greetings!

FOUR Muslims are gunning for the Senate in 2010 – lawyer Adel Tamano (Nacionalista Party), feminist Yasmin Lao (Liberal Party) ,  Dr. Zafrullah Alonto (Bangon Pilipinas) and lawyer Firdausi Abbas.  Former COMELEC Commissioner and election reform advocate Mehol Sadain (HALAL) and Amina Rasul of the Philippine Council for Islam and Democracy (PCID) were considered potentials but they begged off knowing the large “investment” needed by a candidate from a minority community. The last senator from the Muslim minority elected was two decades ago.
In a conversation with Vice-President Noli de Castro on the infamous Ampatuan town incident of November 23, he thought concrete results should come out of the martial law declaration. De Castro  is  married to a Maguindanawan, Arlene Sinsuat (a former high official at the ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs)  related by affinity to the Ampatuans.

The future of Arabic language: A foreigner’s perspective (Part 2) PDF Print E-mail

Aleem Abdul Hannan Tago

By Abdul Hannan Tago, ArabNews

Arabic is a major language – a beautiful one at that – but many are wondering why many non-Arabic speaking expatriates are reluctant to study it, much more to send their children to Arabic schools to study.

A fellow researcher, who is a Saudi, made a survey regarding it, and he found out that:

First: Expatriates do not expect much benefit from learning Arabic language, and does not guarantee good future for their children both in Saudi Arabia and in their home countries.

Second: Saudi schools do not allow foreigners to continue their studies after graduation from high school here, which casts doubt on the uncertainty of their education.

Foreign children attending school in Saudi Arabia at the primary level leave the school after realizing that they could not continue studying after high school.

OFWs rally behind leader running for Philippine Senate PDF Print E-mail

Ronaldo Z. Concha | Arab News

JEDDAH: Filipino groups in Jeddah have rallied behind a community leader who is running for senator in the May 2010 Philippine national elections.

Nazruddin “Rudy” Dianalan, a systems engineer at Saudi Arabian Airlines and one of the most prominent Filipino community leaders in the Kingdom, filed his candidacy late last month on a platform of better welfare and protection of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families.

“In my long involvement in community activities, I have seen the need by OFWs, especially those in distress, for a voice in the Philippine Congress,” said Dianalan, who comes from a family of public servants in the southern Philippine city of Marawi.

“OFWs need a voice coming from a real OFW and I believe that once they become aware of our plan, they will support us,” he said.
