36 Iimams Undergo Training PDF Print E-mail

By: EDD K. USMAN

To further improve the knowledge of "imams" (prayer leaders) and help promote Islam's message of peace and tolerance for other faith communities and unity with their fellow Filipinos, the Insan Islamic Assembly (IIA), Inc. conducted a two-day imam training seminar in Marawi City for 36 Muslim religious leaders.

Imams are Islamic religious leaders who are qualified to lead prayers as well as deliver sermons, among others.

Insan chairman Aleem Najeeb Taher spearheaded the Imam Training Seminar on July 24-25 at the Marawi Resort Hotel (formerly Ayala Resort Hotel) with the theme "Strengthening the Way of Performing Imamship for the Community" aimed at widening their horizon on many issues confronting Islam and Muslims.

"The objective of the training is to revitalize the role of our imam in their respective masjeed (mosque) where they are performing (their tasks)," said Taher.

By Samira Gutoc , YMPN (11-20-July-2010)

I LOVE HIM: 108-year old Muslim lady on 38-year old hubby

Extending my congratulations to dear fellow Young Moro Professional TENG MANGANSAKAN II for the successful run and launch of the FIRST Bangsamoro full-length film LIMBUNAN at the CINEMALAYA film festival. I also take pride in the success of Director Sheron DAYOC's HALAW which won Best Director- New Breed, Best Actor and Editing among 19 full-length films in the awards night. Dayoc like I was keenly passionate about exposing the plight of boat people from Western Mindanao who were cast AWAY as REFUGEES in Sabah since the 1970s. Another must-watch film in the CINEMALAYA is REKRUT by Danny Anonuevo ("Crying Ladies") who draws inspiration from JABIDAH MASSACRE.  In its synopsis, "What is the true measure of friendship? JAmir, a devout Muslim and  Lando , a Christian, are among an elite group of young recruits formed by military officers for a covert operation."

Happy 92nd birthday Nelson Mandela! In November 2009, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly declared July 18 as “Nelson Mandela International Day” in recognition of the former South African President’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom. Now who is the Nelson Mandela of the Philippines? A – Fidel V. Ramos; B- Cory Aquino; C- Nur Misuari; D- still to be born…

Return home after 8 years of study abroad PDF Print E-mail

By: Abdul Hannan Faisal Tago  (From his memory “Climbing The Ladder of Success”) Series (12)

I had been away for almost eight years continuously without seeing my parents. I almost missed everything at home. I traveled home immediately after my exam in May 1991 without waiting for the result.

A few months before my departure, I sent a letter to my parents giving them the news they had been waiting for and requested my mother to prepare my favorite vegetable food, cassava’s leaf. My mother used to cook for us during my childhood at home. It was a simple but delicious dish.

I wanted my mother to feel that I was still the same old “Tawagun”, the name I was called at home by my mom, and can cope with the vicissitudes of life as before. I did not intimate the exact day or time I shall reach my hometown in Mindanao, as I did not want to put my parents and relatives to inconvenience.

MORO NOTES - 21-30-Jun-2010 PDF Print E-mail

By Samira Gutoc , YMPN (21-30-June-2010)

No Sex Ed for Moros?

Greetings cyberspace friends! I had a hiatus from writing my almost-a-decade-old Moro Notes for more than 3 months now. I am hopefully back with the help of Mindanao State University (MSU)-English students. I am rallying their support in this little net copy with a Big Heart. Come join me in bridging Moro homeland and the rest of the world by sending stories and controversial tidbits from your part of the world.

I am glad to announce that Mindanao filmmakers who I reported last year would produce films that tug at our hearts are showing their products in Manila. Gutierrez Mangansakan III continues his lone travail as the only Moro filmmaker in the commercial industry and heritage defender as he tackles in simple fashion arranged marriages in the film called LIMBUNAN. Sheron Dayoc of Zamboanga directs HALAW, Ways of the Sea and tackles the controversial Southern Philippine refugees in Sabah. Gala night is on July 14, 9 pm at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

CATCH THE FIRST BANGSAMORO FULL LENGTH FILM LIMBUNAN at the UP Film Institute on July 21.
Just more than a week before P-Noy’s inauguration to be held on June 30, another extra-juidical killing inaugurs the country and him. In DAVAO CITY, an unidentified gunman shot dead a broadcaster in an attack in the restive region of Mindanao.
